Touch of DRC a touch of Hyde equals the Montrachet of Cali...
Hyde de Villaine
Larry Hyde is one of the best growers of Carneros. His Chardonnay is legendary and producers from David Ramey, Aubert and Kistler line up for as much fruit as they can get. However Larry along with his cousin Pamela de Villaine and brother-in-law Aubert de Villaine do produce a limited amount of wine under the HDV label.
Yes, I said the de Villaine are Larry’s partners. The same de Villaines of Burgundy’s famed Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Now of course Aubert knows a thing or two about producing Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay. The DRC Le Montrachet is one of the most sought after Chardonnay in the world.
Now I jest in equating the HDV Chardonnay to Le Montrachet. They are countries apart and stylistically different. But the one thing that is for sure is the quality of the vineyards, winemaking and resulting wine is top notch.
In the latest Wine Advocate Antonio Galloni (who also review DRC) had a spectacular review on the HDV 2009 Chardonnay:
We just landed 10 cases of this wine this morning in our warehouse and I wanted to make sure that you had first crack on securing some before it is too late.
