Greatest Since 1964: 96pt, 12 years old, under $50...
"Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from." Neal Martin the Wine Advocate 8/12.
2001 and 1998 are the two greatest releases of this wine since 1964 and the duo of 1976 and 1977...Yes, we are talking about Rioja...specifically the La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904!
One of the benchmarks for Rioja over the years, the 904 Gran Reserva is known for turning out great examples of traditional Rioja. However, as you know by now the exceptional vintages in Rioja are few and far in between and the 2001 vintage has long been awaited. Since 2001 is one of the greatest vintages for Rioja in the past two decades we have been waiting for this wine to finally be released. That time has come as this wine is to arrive around the end of the month!
In addition to the highly awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 904, we are also receiving more of the exceptional 1998 Gran Reserva 904. The 1998 Gran Reserva 904 is a fantastic bottle that is already drinking great. With a limited amount previously in stock, we have been watching this beauty over the past year evolve nicely. Considered to be one of the finest wines of the 1998 vintage, the Gran Reserva 904 is the highest rated 'Traditional' styled Rioja from the Wine Advocate, the wines that topped the 904 were the modern style of Artadi.
Both wines are offering exceptional value for the quality, comparison to their peers and their age. We are talking 12 and 15 year old wines here for only $44 to $48 per bottle!!!
"The 2001 Gran Reserva 904 will not be released for another 3 years. Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040...96." WA 6/10.
"The 1998 Gran Reserva 904 is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano aged in American cask for four years. It has a very fine nose with notes of dried honey, cloves, raisin and wild heather that blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of orange peel on the entry. It has an effortless sense of harmony and poise, with a crisp tense finish and suffused with a sorbet-like freshness. It just dances across the palate, a memorable Rioja with style and panache." Drink now-2030.
